Test Windows 2008 r2 Server restore with Symantec System Revocery 2013

I need a solution

Hello All,

I have a couple servers running 2008 r2 with Symantec System Revoery 2013 installed. I'd like to run a test to see how fast i can completely restore a server using this program.  i was thinking of purchasing a regular 64bit PC (non-server) and see if i can restore it to dissimilar hardware. Is this possible? Do I need to run server 2008 r2 on the test machine also? Can it run Windows 7 or 8 and just override it with the server restore? Hope i described this well enough.

Thanks in advance,

Alex

SSR 2011 and SEP 12.1 SBE: Access to Settings in Tech Notes

I need a solution

I'm having a similar problem... However, I use Symantec System recovery 2011 (Server Edition) and SEP 12.1 Small Business Edition.  SEP SBE doesn't provide access to most of the settings specified in the tech notes.

Quick details:  Running backups to a NAS

  • SSR is running on Windows SBS 2011 Std
  • SSR is writing to the NAS at ~500kB/sec
  • Just performing a regular file copy runs at ~ 68 MB/sec (even while the backup is running too)

This is a new problem... I had to do a fresh install of SEPM (lost all my policies etc.) which is when the slowdown began.  I suspect that I had some legacy policies set in SEP which was allowing the recovery software to work, but I can't get to those policies in the current version of SEPM.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Dan

I need a solution

I'm having a problem restoring images for Windows 8.1 32bit both Home and Professional versions using SSR 2013 SP2.

I have created various desktop images in VMWare Workstation version 10 which I plan to deploy to physical hardware using SSR and the Restore Anywhere feature. All of the systems created using MBR have been tested by restoring them onto new Virtual Machines also using Restore Anywhere. All of them were successful with the exception of Windows 8.1 32bit. The successful restores also included the 32bit windows 8 and 64bit versions of Windows 8.1, it is just the 32bit versions of Windows 8.1 that have this error that pops up towards the end of the restore process..

SSR Error.JPG

All of my backup images were created with a cold backup. I recreated the SSR backup images for windows 8.1 in case something was wrong with them but the error still occurs.

In the searching I did there were suggestions that this error was associated with resizing disks, this is not the case on my part. The virtual disk used by the recovery virtual machine is the same size as the source virtual disk. The article TECH215429 (http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...) has two workarounds. Unfortunately both workarounds failed for me (and in workaround 2 I substituted size=350 for SIZE=100 because it is Windows 8.1).

The article TECH215429 also had the following in bold "NOTE: Customers experiencing this issue are encouraged to contact Symantec Technical Support as data is still being collected to assist in resolving this issue.". I was quite willing to contribute information to assist with resolution but the only way I could find to contact technical support was to raise a case, which I did so. Unfortunately I no longer have an active support contract so the request for a case was denied.

Edit 26/May - Additional information

I have carried out further testing. As a normal step I always check the "Check File System after Restore" option as I want to be confortable something has not gone wrong during the restore process. It seems that choosing this option under for a Windows 8.1 32bit (either Home or Pro editions) restore causes this error; as when I don't check this box the restore is successful (though my comfort levels are decreased).

As I mentioned above the error is occuring during a restore of an MBR BIOS system. I have since carried out testing on a UEFI based system (Win 8.1 32bit) and I can confirm the same error with the check file system option occurs there as well.

I'm sure someone will suggest that there is a problem with the system I took the backups off. But the same problem would have to occur on four separate installs (win 8.1 32bit home and pro on both MBR and UEFI) so I don't think that's likely.

I need a solution

Hi,

i want to convert a backup file from Symantec System Recovery 2013 (sv2i) file.

the machine is a Windows 7 64 bit, with 2 partions;  1. (100 MB) System Partion;  2. (250 GB) C-Drive.

In System Recovery 2013 is a option to convert sv2i to vmware vmdk, so should i use this Option from System Recovery 2013 or should i convert the sv2i with vmware converter?

THX

Hallo,

Distribute backup policy across groups

I need a solution

Hi

I'm using SSR 2013 together with the management console.
I have a backup policy distibuted to 270 workstations, the policy runs each weekend and performs a backup of the c drive to a network NAS.

To spread the network traffic and the load on the NAS, I wonder how can I divide the workstations in 4 groups with the management console.

Group 1 has to run the first sunday of the month
Group 2 the 2nd sunday
...

So I guess I need to create 4  backup policies with a different schedule.

How can i divide the workstations into 4 groups?
Using filters and manually add each new workstation to the filter?
Using Organizational views and add each new workstation to the group?

How can I schedule the policy to run on the first/second/3rd/4rd sunday of the month.
In a monthly schedule I can only choose the day.

That's means I have to change the policy each month.

Please help!

I need a solution

Hi Guys,

need a quick answer here...iss SSR the ideal solution for imaging, and possibly restoring physical servers quickly?

I have a requirement to look into a solution that will create images of physical servers. not much is expected to change, and another application takes care of normal backups.

What would I be able to run this on? A physical server, or will a VM work? Is local storage a good option, or would I need to look into direct attached storage?

Thanks!
Craig

No target drives listed in SSR 2013

I need a solution

Hi

I am attempting to restore a server snapshot using the Symantec System Recovery boot CD but no target drives are being listed.

The server is a vmware/vcloud VM. I have run the driver validation tool which only mentioned the network driver was missing, which I have resolved. It didn't say anything about the storage driver being missing.

If I run a cmd from the Analyse menu and run diskpart, there are no fixed disks to show.

The VM boots in to the OS fine, so I know the virtual hard drive assigned to the VM is functioning fine.

Any ideas please?

Cheers,

James

Hello All,

Here's my SOURCE configuration:

1) Dell PowerVault NX3100 running Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Standard

2) Attached to the NX3100 is a Dell PowerVault MD1200 (NAS)

3) SSR 2011 SP3 installed on the Dell NX3100 Win Storage Server 2008 R2 Standard

Here is my DESTINATION/TARGET configuration:

1) Being Backuped to a different Dell PowerVault MD1200 (NAS) that is attached to another Dell PowerVault NX3100 (Same OS as above)

History:

Initial backups to the other Dell MD1200 (NAS) was working fine.   Backup Job setup to run Weekly - Mon - Full Backup, Tue thru Sat - Incremental backups

Data being backuped resides on my SOURCE configuration's MD1200.

Backup Destination/Target is to a different Dell MD1200.

Now we are experiencing backup failures.

Here is the Event Log Entry:

Error EC8F17B7:  Cannot create a recovery points for job:  Drive Backup of JISTL (F:\).

Error EC8F03EA:  Cannot create a virtual volume image of the selected drive.

Error EBAB0013:  A test that safeguards the integrity of the program failed unexpectedly.  Bad numeric conversion: positive overflow (UMI:V-281-3215-6071)

Has anyone encountered this error before?    Thank you in Advance for any support.

Ok wasnt sure if this went in the Endpoint Management section or SSR so Admins please move if needed.

I just installed Client Management Suite 7.5 SP1 but during install it stated that there were 3 unsupported apps and they would be uninstalled. I went through thinking SIM may have some other items like SSR 2014 or something...

so anyone have any insight on this as this will stop us from upgrading from 7.1 SP2 MP1.1

SSR offsite problems

I need a solution

Hi all,

I asked before about this problem, and thought it was solved, but I have it again:

We have 2 computers which run backup jobs via the network (the backup destinations are attached to a remote computer).

The regular backups runs o.k. (at least most of the times), but we have problems with the offsite copy: in one computer it's not performed at all, and in the second one, only 2 out of the 4 partitions are backed up.

We get the following error message:

Error EC8F1F5B: Cannot create offsite copy for job Drive Backup of <backup_name>
Error EC8F1F5D: Cannot create offsite copy <backup_file_name>
Error E7D1001E: Unable to read from file.
Error EBAB03F1: Following Operating System error occurred while performing requested operation: 'The specified network name is no longer available.'
Error EBAB03F1: Following Operating System error occurred while performing requested operation: 'Unspecified error.' (UMI:V-281-3215-8027)

Details:
Source: Symantec System Recovery

I don't think this problem has anything to do with the firewall or the anti-virus, since it occures even when I turned them off. I tried to google it, but just got confused.

Anyone has an idea ?

Thank you

Hello,

I use backup exec 2010 (version 9.0.0.35656), I simply have a single backup guard, I put a limit on the recovery point 1. Sometimes deleting the last restore point does not work and then restore points are cumulative.

I need a solution

I am having a problem with my laptop in recovering the data on one of the partition. On my laptop, I had PGP-WDE installed with C: and D:. On C: the OS, WinXP was installed and D: had all my personal/official data.

I have upgraded to windows 7 and laptop was formatted without backing up the data from D: as Copy/Paste could not be performed.

Now my laptop is working again and PGP has been installed but the D: when I double-click on it says ‘The disk in drive D: is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?’.

I am not sure if my old data is still present on the D: and could be recovered using PGP or any other software.

I really need help on this. Please someone guide me or provide instructions on recovery of data

Hello,

I wanted to create a DVD set with a Recovery image which is bootable and directly installs the contained system image which was split to multiple DVDs.

Is this possible with SSR 2013 Desktop Edition? I also got here Ghost 15 if this would be the better tool for this purpose.

Thanks in advance!

Ahoi,

ich hab bei einen Kunden folgendes Problem

Backup-fail.PNG

BESR deletes clients from the computer list

I need a solution

We have a list of computers which we backup to the same target share in BESR. BESR then automatically creates a subfolder for every computer name. But once in a while a new individual target is being automatically created in the target list and asks for credentials. We can type in the necessary credentials and the backups work fine again.

The problem is we do not whant an individual target for every computer in the target list. When we remove the subfolder name for the computer from the newly created backup target, the client computer is being automatically deleted from the computer list.

How can we work with one target only and without deleting the clients from the computer list?

I backed up a Win7 x64 Machine with latest System Recovery 2013. (Full backup)

As I tried to recover this backup to the same Machine with latest SRD Disc the recovery process works fine but the system won't find a boot record.

I'm wondering about Firmware Tag of this backup.

It's BIOS but the System is efi based.

Any suggestions?
