SSR 2013R2 installs fine but doesn't survive a reboot

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

I have upgraded a Windows 7 Pro system from 2013 to 2013R2 to test it out and it seems to install and work just fine until I reboot the system. Once I reboot the system the main service crashes with

In the System log

The Symantec System Recovery service terminated with service-specific error %%-2147221005.

In the application log

Error EC8F1775: An error occurred while starting Symantec System Recovery service.
Error EC8F1772: The following component is not installed correctly: Symantec.SpnRegistration.
Error EBAB03F1: Following Operating System error occurred while performing requested operation: 'Invalid class string.' (UMI:V-281-3215-6005)

I can repair the software and it works after the next reboot but if I reboot after that it starts failing again.

Found this for an older version

REGSVR32 "<drive:>:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec System Recovery\Agent\spnregister.dll" (64 bit and 32 bit versions).

This seems to fix the problem.

What's being backed up during an incremental?

I need a solution

Morning everyone.

I just wondered if it's possible to determine what was actually backed up during an incremental backup job.

I only ask as we have a job which is set to create an hourly incremental backup throughout the day which will usually create a file of anything between 50 and 100MB but on rare occasion, it will create one which is 1-2GB and I'd like to know what content has changed and has triggered such a unusually large backup file to be created.

I appreciate that the software backs up modified sectors as opposed to file content so I'm not holding my breath on this one but thought it worth asking.

I've already confirmed that there aren't any processes running on the machine which could cause such a mass change like a defrag or similar so any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Restoring from Raid 0 to non-raid disks (Windows Server 2012 R2)

I need a solution

Good Morning,

I have a RAID 0 disk (2 x 500 GB). Is it possible to make a backup (for example using Symantec System Recovery) and restore the backup to a non-raid disks ? I have used around 390 GB of space and both partitions would fit on both drives. The problem is that I don't want to reinstall windows and all the software. I have Widnows 2012 Server

SSR 2013 Agent is holding a connection open on a CIFS share

I need a solution

From our SSR management server I'm creating jobs that schedule backups for quite a few servers (about 50) in the same domain.  I'm pointing their backups to a CIFS share on another storage unit, but that storage unit accepts only 32 connections at a time.

Once 32 machine connect to that share to perform their SSR backup, none of them releases their connection -- even after their backups are completed.

Is there a way to make them release their connection?

All the servers being backed up are either 2008 R2 or Server 2012 (mostly R2).

Error code: VSS_E_FLUSH_WRITES_TIMEOUT (-2.147.212.525).

Free space on D:\ : 36%

Free space on destination USB2.0 HDD: 1,20 TB

Average backup duration if it runs: approx. 2 hours

Periodically we get following error:

Details: 0xE4F3000E

This is what we have already done:

- In Trend Micro Antivirus we have excluded the Symantec folder
- attached new external USB Drives
- removed old Devices from the device list
- created new backup jobs
- split the jobs, one for each drive
- changed backup start time
- turned encryption on/off
- weekly defrag of drives (max. 3-4% fragmentation)
- manually creating a shadowcopy works OK
- ran C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec System Recovery\Fixinstall.bat

Additional information:

> vssadmin list providers: "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0" (should be standard for 2013 version)

- If we run "vssadmin list writers", many appear in a " bad state" and we only can fix this with a server restart.
- After the server restart, every writer is fine and the backup works for a few days (max 1 week)
- However, if you log onto the server and manually start the backup, it works! Only the scheduled job aborts after 10 minutes.

Any ideas or tips on what we can do to try and resolve this problem? Many thanks.

Full backup in Symantec System Recovery 2013

Is there a solution for ensuring the full backup also if the scheduled time for full backup has been missed?

Currently - if the scheduled time for full backup has been missed - SSR 2013 continues with incremental backups. This can result in a continuity  of incremental backups with no intermediate full backup.

Many thanks - Michael

Howto extract data from incomplete Powerquest 2vi Backup

I need a solution

Hello @ all,

In 2004 I backed up a system with (I suppose) Drive Image 4 by Powerquest, knowing I will have to restore this image some years later. The Software created 11 cd-rom size backup parts + one s2vi file . 10 of them are in good state ("name_s01-s10.2vi" + "name.s2vi file"). The 1st part, "name.v2i" is missing.
The content of "name.s2vi" is pointing to, of course, the missing file.

Reinstalling "Drive Image" and testing "Symantec System Recovery 2013 R2" brought me the information, that an extraction of the incomplete backup would not be possible ... Some tried (de-)packager aren't able to andle the data format.

Is there really no way to extract the remaining data as mentioned here: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH223999?
I would really appreciate to recover as much as possible of the backed up files.

Thank you,
Stefan

Manage backup destinations>Delete recovery point does not delete files?

I need a solution

I have a simple maintenance question.  I wanted to properly delete a very old backup/restore point/image, whatever it is called.  It was an independent image of a PC drive with the image stored on a NAS.

I used SSR to go into advanced, right clicked the drive letter and found the restore point I wanted.  It matched the name, date, etc. of the one I wanted to delete.  I right clicked and chose delete, then chose yes.

It disappeared from the SSR lists but the backup files are still there on the NAS.  So I deleted manually....but I would have thought SSR have deleted the files but perhaps this is a safety feature.

Thanks,

BJB

Hi

I tried to covert my physical server(X3650m4 + win2012) to virtual server(hyper-v) by SSR 2013 R2.  The covert process worked, but when the virtual server booted, it failed.

I wonder if SSR 2013 R2 support P2V for  the server with UEFI bios & GPT disk.  Thank you.

Reparing SSR 2013 R2

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

Hello,

Recently I found a reparing process in SSR, which is not proposed in the users'book ! Last two years, with Windows 8.1, I was suffering many troubles with the SSR Agent (if the computer remains unused during two weeks or if you change a hard disk which arrives out of order). SSR says something like: "Connexion failed ..."; "Can't spread out the agent ..."; "Incorrect user's name or user's password". Recently I am on the point to throw SSR to the garbage can, but as an ultimate effort I decide to reinstall the same SSR version on the preceeding (without deleting the existing version). Of course a comment arrives: "You can't install two exemplaries of SSR ...". OK; The interesting fact arrives after a while: a window with two items; -1- repair SSR - Menu2- reinstall SSR. I select "Repair ..." .The repairing process takes place with the usual two progression bars and SSR is launched successfully with my personnal configuration ! Conclusion: 1- very likely in some cases the SSR agent is desactivated. Unfortunately SSR don't give any valid way to reactivate it. You have to consult the user's notice to find how to reactivate it in the Windows Services Menu. 2- I was not aware of the existence of any repairing process in SSR !

How to find the Windows Service Menu with Windows 8.1: under MUI type anywhere "Services" and click on Services. On the list which arrives select, near the bottom "Symantec System Recovery". At the upper left corner it appears a SSR service description, and two items: Activate, Desactivate. Good luck ! MR:-)

I have SSR deployed for centralized backup & recovery of Windows systems. I also have a few systems which can not be connected to network, isolated. Can I use SSR to take the image backup locally to a USB/DVD? How do I restore the image?

I need a solution

Hello,

I have a windows 2008 R2 domain controller on a HYPER-V virtual machine that is failing all backups.

The error is always the same:

Dettagli: 0xE7C3000F

where the "27" after shadowcopy is a number that starts from 1 and increases after every failed attempt, and resents after rebooting.

Same days ago I was able to make a backup, after changing the backup setting by adding the option "make a full VSS backup". After changing that option I was able to make a backup, then a few days after the error started to appear again.

I have already run chkdks /f/r and no error was found.

SreEula.exe - System Error when booting 2013 R2 SRD

I need a solution

Hi all.

I have had a support ticket open on this now for almost two weeks, with no luck.

I have 2 issues.

Dell Poweredge T420.  Intel Xeon E5-2450 2.1.  16GB RAM.    Windows Server 2012 R2 Std.   System Recover 2013 R2 w/ current MS ADK installed.

All Windows updates installed, and Live update ran.

1.  When trying to create a "Typical" SRD, I am only offered "German" as a language selection.

2.  More imporant issue:    I cannot boot the Advanced 64-bit SRD after seemingly successfully creating it in English.   Booting starts out fine.  Blue Windows logo...white spinning in process icon.  I get the symantec boxes for loading drivers, checking system requirements, network confguration, but then I get an error box titled:  "SreEula.exe - System Error" .  The message is: "The program can't start because oledlg.dll is missing from your computer.  Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem".  I have tried repairing, uninstallling and re-installing the software multiple times, but always get the same error.

I haven't gotten anywhere with tech support.

Anyone with any ideas??

Thanks

Mike

Best solution to back up Citrix Xen Server

I need a solution

Hello,

I am wondering what the best solution would be for the following:

I have on Citrix Xen Server host that has 7 virtual machines on it.  I am currently using PHD Virtual to back this up to a NAS.  I am looking to move to different software for the backups.  One of the virtual machines is running SQL and one is running AD and DNS.  There is also one physical server that has AD, DNS, and DHCP on it that i would also like to back up in the same solution.  What i was curious about is what is the best way to back all of this up?  Is it Back Up Exec or System Restore?  Or would neither work?  I am looking for something that will back up to the existng NAS and allow for item level restores as well as fast restores of full VM's if ever needed.

Second question is, assuming one of the two products will work is it best practice to install it on its own server or could it be installed on teh physical that is existing with AD, DNS and DHCP?  I am assuming its own server and that is what i would shoot for, but for the sake of saving money i like to know my options.

Thank you for your assistance.

Symantec System Recovery 2013 R2 Authentication Issue with NAS

I need a solution

Hi,

I imagine this question has already been addressed before but Google / Bing searches have lead me on a wild goose chase, so I'm posting this question here in hopes of an easy resolution.

We're using Symantec System Recovery 2013 R2 and we just installed a new Qnap NAS.  The environment is mixed Win7 / Win8 and some of the SSR clients have no issue authenticating with the NAS so that they can store backups there.  Roughly 35% of the client machines, though, can't authenticate correctly, no matter what login I use (e.g. domain\username : password, localusername : password, etc.).  Since it works on most of the machines, I feel confident my domain accounts and local accounts are setup correctly.  I even synced the passwords temporarily so I could side step the possiblity of a mistyped password.  The clients that won't authenticate with the new NAS will authenticate with an old failing Lacie NAS with a default local account of admin : admin, but they simply fail with every account I've tried with the new NAS.  I can't detect anything different between the windows 7 boxes that fail and the ones that suceed (same with the Win8 boxes).

Any clues would be appreciated, since I need to clean up our backup architeture as soon as I can.

Thanks.

Drive information in SSR 2013 R2 event log messages

I need a solution

Hi,

When SSR 2013 starts a diskbased job, it logs the following message to the Windows event log:

Info 6C8F1F65: The drive-based backup job, Drive Backup of (*:\), (C:\), (E:\), has been started automatically.

When SSR 2013 R2 starts a diskbased job, it logs the following message to the Windows event log:

Info 6C8F1F65: The drive-based backup job, Full Backup, has been started automatically.

While i think it is a good thing that the job name is now included I miss which drives are being backed up.

Is there anyway to get SSR R2 to also log which drives are backed up? Or can it be added again in an update / servicepack? I use this information in a monitoring application and this causes issues for me.

Regards

Kristoffer

bonjour,

merci
