General Problem with Offsite Copy to USB

I need a solution

Hi,

I currently look after approximately 100ish System Recovery installs from the days of 8.5 through to 2013 (majority on 2011 or 2013) all on windows server operating systems from 2003 - 2012.

We have a pretty general problem with offsite usb drives not automatically optimising when the job is ran, ie, we keep 2 weeks of recovery points on the NAS (total of say 800gb to make the maths easy!) and then have two offsite usb drives, each with 1tb capacity, what we find is that the drive will update fine when it is completely empty and write all 800gb across over the course of the two weeks to each drive as it is changed in turn.  Then when the NAS optimises (and this works without issue) the onsite job will complete and then when it tries to run the offsite copy it will run the drive out of space because there is not room for a full base recovery point (400gb) on the drive.  We then end up at the point where symantec is no longer aware of the recovery points from the last two weeks and there is no chance of the USB offsite copy being deleted automatically. This then has to be done manually and then the job will need to catch up taking the time to write all of the recovery points that have been created since the last optimisation of the NAS.

As you can imagine with looking after a large number of clients running system recovery this has pretty much become a full time job for something i feel should "just work"  I understand any product requires some amount on hand holding but the amount of time spent on this is becoming a bit ridiculous.

If anybody else has experienced this please lets see if we can try and resolve this because I have read a lot of similar issues on these forums but the fix always appears to be "delete the points manually" If i was looking after one server, even ten servers this would be fine but with the large amount we support we are considering moving to another product to reduce the amount of maintenance time required.

Thanks in advance,

Sam Walsh

SSR2013 - MIB OID not working - No such object

I need a solution

I'm trying to work with OID's for Symantec to take up the slack from our RMM system which has not integrated its management features with Symantec System Recovery as effectively as I would have liked. I'm hoping by using OID's rather than an event log check the results maybe more concise.

Anyway my issue is this. I have found the .MIB from the Symantec download (60 day trial). Input it into the my MIB browser and it gave me the OID. I have enabled SNMP in System Recovery told it to report everything. Warnings, Errors & Critical - Any messages.I have completed a backup job giving it something to report upon.

It is running on a HP ML350 G4 server running Windows 2008R2 with SNMP Service running and public read only attributes. I'm running HP Insight manager and the monitoring agent by GFI. GFI currently monitors the RAID array via SNMP very effectively as soon as I eject a disk it tells me it has become degraded and when I reinsert it it tells me its rebuilding and when the system is ok. So I know SNMP is working fine from that front.

I'm getting messages that there is no such object from my GFI dashboard. I've tried playing around with the OID values in the dashboard but to no avail.

Any help would be much appreciated.

System Recovery and Windows Shares

I need a solution

Across all of our sites, we are migrating to the Symantec System Recovery platform and so far, it seems to be a very powerful product.

One issue I am noticing, however, is that SSR tends to always stay connected to the backup location, at all times... We are sending our backups to a central backup server at each site, and simply specifying the UNC path to that folder in the backup job. From this, our backup servers seem to take a big hit -- I assume each connection requires some form of memory usage and the connection seems to stay open all of the time, in fact, I have 64 open connections from machines running SSR 2013, but no files being written or read... Just idle SMB connections.

Is this the intended behavior? Any way to turn it off?

I have considered running the backup to the local machine, then transferring over FTP to the backup server using the offsite copy methods, but several of our servers do not have a seperate disk or partition to store the image while it is being created.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

J

SSR2013 and User data in Users\USERID\Appdata\Roaming

I need a solution

Got a problem... want to back up the folder containing my Thunderbird e-mails. They are in a specific PROFILE folder. I can NOT see that folder, my USERID doesn't show Appdata, even when I run SSR2013 as Administrator?

Short of running a CMD file to copy that elsewhere, say on every shutdown and THEN using SSR to do the same (redundant probably anyway in that case) is there a way to indicate to SSR that that folder should be imaged on a schedule?

I need a solution

Hi,

I'm installing System Recovery 2013 Trial on a Win 7 x64 desktop and the installation fails with this message:

FATAL ERROR: Error 1327.Invalid Drive: Z:\

I had several SMB shares mounted and mapped to drive letters on this machine before I started the first installation attempt. All were working fine. I have since disconnected all of them, including Drive Z: and rebooted the disktop AFTER disconneecting the drives.

The error persists, and I am still uinable to install.

I am running the installation using a local account with administrator privileges.

Thanks in advance,

Tony.

SSR 2011 Managed Console backing up EISA Configuration

I need a solution

Ok did a search and didnt find it..

We are starting go get SSR 2011 (yes will do 2013 later).. some of our test machines are looking good. We have a vendor box that showed up and still has the eisa configuration partition of 64mb...

SSR didnt automatically back this up and I know it will be a problem down the road. Is there an option that I am missing to backup the hidden partitions? I chose ALL Drives and the eisa config does not show up with a drive letter so I see that is why it didnt back it up.

File and Folder Backup

I need a solution

Hi - I am running SSR 2013 and I'm doing a daily File and Folder Backup , but I noticed that it defaults to an incremental and only backs up the changed files.

I want to force it to backup the Files/Folder regardless of whether it changed or not.  And, I want to specify that it should only keep 7 days worth

of this backup because the entire machine gets backed up weekly.  Can you tell me how to do this please?

Thanks

Cindy

VM does not start with converted vmdk file by SSR 2013

I need a solution

Hi all,

I need your help about the Virtual Machine which made with converted vmdk file by SSR 2013.

When I power on the VM by vSphere Client, it does not start.
vSphere Client show this Massage.
-------------------------------------
Failed to start the virtual machine.
Module DevicePowerOn power on failed.
Unable to create virtual SCSI device for scsi0:0, '/vmfs/volumes/50f8922d-eb60e350-2100-6c626d42c9ce/SSD08004.VMAD01.LOCAL__C_Drive-s001.vmdk'
Failed to open disk scsi0:0: Unsupported or invalid disk type 7. Ensure that the disk has been imported.
-------------------------------------
"ssd08004" is the original Machine's hostname.

This VM using vmdk file that converted by SSR 2013 from v2i file.
and that v2i file is made from ssd08004 by online backup.
(I using SSR2013 as Evaluation mode.)

I guess that the VM settings something wrong, or vmdk file is something broken during copy to ESXi datastore.
But I'm not sure.

How can I find the procedure to troubleshoot in this case?
or Can I get the reference to proper settings to build VM?

My Environment is below.

Products: System Recovery 2013 Virtual Edition (11.0.0.4600)
Installing to: Windows7 Ultimate SP1
(Virtual Machine on Xen Server/1vCPU, 1.5GB vRAM)

Backup Machine: ssd08004
 OS: Windwos Server 2008 R2
 Disk: 70GB Raid0
Drive: C:\ only. (+ System pertition.) 7.6GB Use.

Virtual Machine Settings (Custom):
 VM Version 8 (latest)
 Guest OS type: MS WS2008 R2 (64bit)
 vCPU x1, vRAM 4GB (default)
 NIC Adapter: E1000 (default)
SCSI Controller: LSI Losic SAS / VMware Paravirtual
(I tried both of SCSI Controller, but same results.)
 Virtual device node: SCSI(0:0)

with ESXi 5.1 and vSphere Client 5.1

Thank you in advance.

Restoring Domain Controllers

I need a solution

Here is the scenerio.

Two Windows 2003 Standard DCs. (Server A and B)

Server A holds all FSMO roles and was the first DC in the domain.

Server B was added later and is just a backup.

Server A's AD got corrupted and needs to be restored.  I have available backups that I know are good.  Is it just as simple as booting off the SRS restore CD and burning the image down on the disk?

And since I'm asking...what if it was Server B that had a hardware failure and had to recover to it after the hardware was fixed?

I need a solution

I'm a former Ghost 15 user, and thought I'd try out SSR 2013 as a replacement for my upgraded Windows 8 desktop (as it's unclear as to whether Ghost will continue).  I'm running on the 60 day trial, but so far, not so good.

I created a backup as it used to exist in Ghost 15 under Windows 7 (which I uninstalled and selected the option to 'not' retain any settings in case I reinstalled later), and when it runs, I get the following error:

Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: Drive Backup of System Reserved (*:\), (C:\), (D:\).
Error E4F3000B: PreSnap failed on volume  . (UMI:V-281-3215-6071)

Details:
Source: Symantec System Recovery

Any thoughts as to how to resolve that so I can continue a successful evaluation?

Unlocking SSR on clients after SSR Management Server is Removed

$

I need a solution

We had a well functioning SSR Managment Console (10.01), but decided not to use it anymore.  We uninstalled it from the server that hosted it.

But now, the client boxes for which it was controlling SSR, have backup jobs and other settings that are locked.  If we try to make changes, popup appears

"The backup job <name of job> is controlled by a central management system.  contact your admin"

How do I remove the software on the clients that is locking SSR?  I don't want to reinstall on each client box.

I am trying to install Sym_System_Recovery_2013_11.0.0.46600_Basic_Edition_ML_Product on my Window 8 pro 64 system. When running the installer I get the error " Symantec System recovery Basic Edition does not support Windows 7, XP, and Vista" and the installation terminates. This is quite frustrating in a Win 8 environment.

What can I do to get the installation completed? I just downloaded this and the recovery disk program today with help from tech support. I have the weekend to get this going and instal a ssd so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

System Recovery 2013 Desktop Edition Install

I need a solution

I purchased System Recovery 2013 Desktop Edition and downloaded the file.  Found that the .zip file contained an .ISO file.  Burned that to a CD.  Loaded the CD and found that this was not an installation CD,  but a recovery disk with no option to actually install any program.  The instructions do not match what I see when I run this disk.  Product manual shows me that a full application should be installed???

How do I get to the actual software install?  I don't see a setup.exe on the CD made from the .ISO.

Thanks.
